I would like to take the time to
make you aware of the actions of Morningside Police
Department Corporal Vena Mitchell
#243.
On the afternoon of Tuesday, June
6, 2023, officers responded to the Washington
National Cemetery located in the
4100 block of Suitland Road, Suitland, Maryland after receiving multiple 911
calls concerning a shooting. Upon arrival to the cemetery, officers located two
victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Unfortunately, one of the victims later
succumbed to his injuries. A suspect description and vehicle lookout was developed
and broadcasted to adjacent sectors.
During his tour and while
patrolling the Town of Morningside, Corporal Mitchell observed a vehicle
matching the description of the suspect vehicle used in the recent shooting,
traveling at a high rate of speed near the intersection of Suitland Road and Allentown
Road. Corporal Mitchell immediately recognized the vehicle and conducted a traffic
stop. During the stop, Corporal Mitchell was able to confirm he had the
shooting suspect stopped and took him into custody without incident. During the
apprehension. Corporal Mitchell recovered a handgun from the suspect.
Corporal Mitchell's attentiveness
and dedication was critical in the apprehension and quick closure of the murder
case. Corporal Mitchell's keen observation skills and actions illustrates the
kind of devotion that brings great credit upon himself and the law enforcement
profession.
