MIDDLE SCHOOL TOY-23

Middle School Teacher of Year MD District 1 Winner

Monica Galloway

MonicaOdoms Galloway is an educator with 19 years' experience currently serving as a 6th-grade math teacher at Dwight D. Eisenhower Middle School. Over the past 19 years, Monica has served in the capacity of 6th Grade Team Leader, Squadron Commander of the Tuskegee Airmen Cadet Squadron, PBIS Coach, Leadership Officer, Mentor Teacher, Special

Educator, Delegate to the MSEA Convention, and Autism Lead Teacher.

Monica's professional work ethic and commitment to her students is the driving force that propels her to remain steadfast in the pursuit of closing the achievement gap and provide equitable educational opportunities to all students. All students {including herself) have the right and responsibility to learn, which propels her to seek opportunities to effectively impact her students. Her belief is evident by her pursuit of a doctoral degree and national board certification. When asked why she is pursuing a doctorate she responded: "Expanding my horizons and increasing my knowledge of the instructional process as it continues to change and develop is a professional obligation I take seriously." She strongly believes knowledge is power and all students have a right to an equitable education free from barriers and constraints.

Monica maintains her core values by establishing high expectations, modeling moral and ethical professional standards. She challenges herself, her colleagues, and her students to actively participate in the academic process to cultivate community partnerships. Monica's colleagues and students know her as a consummate giver and a person of hospitality. She frequently finances student lunches, donated over $50,000 in school supplies, expended 5,000-plus hours in extracurricular activities, and sponsored hundreds of adventures. Her high standards of professional decorum have earned her an advanced professional license and distinguished ratings. From her military career and leadership in the Civil Air Patrol of the United States Air Force, numerous military distinctions and honors decorate her portfolio.

I emphatically recommend Monica Galloway as a candidate for the Smart/Maher VFW, National Citizenship Education Teacher Award.
